Carpet Cleaner Rental- The Pros and the Cons
As a person with carpet in my home I have a few options available to me when it comes to cleaning them and keeping them fresh, new-looking and healthy for me and my family.
One option would be carpet cleaner rental while another would be to hire a professional carpet cleaning contractor. Another choice might be to purchase my own carpet cleaner. As I see it, the prices charged by professional carpet cleaners are high enough to warrant purchasing my own machine which leaves me with weighing my options of buying the best carpet cleaner or renting (repeatedly) a carpet cleaner from the store.

A few questions (I’d ask myself) before I chose carpet cleaner rentals:
- Who was the last person who rented this machine?
- How well did the last renter clean the machine when he/she was done?
- What type of dirt, grime, grease, spills, etc. was the machine used for?
- When was the carpet cleaner last serviced or how long has it been since someone made sure it works?
- Will the machine break down while I’m using it?
- Has the machine been properly stored?
- How far is the rental store?
- How much will the rental cost?
- How soon will I have to return the carpet cleaner?
- Will I get a place to park that’s close to the door?
- Will there be someone there to help me get the machine to and from my vehicle and in and out of my vehicle?
- How heavy, bulky and awkward is the machine?
- Does the store provide written instructions to follow when I get it home?
- Do I want to deal with the inconvenience of going to the store every time my carpets need to be cleaned?
- Does the carpet cleaner come with any extra attachments so I can do my stairs or upholstery if I choose?
I would need to consider the following about purchasing a carpet cleaner:
- Does it come assembled or is some assembly required?
- Does the height adjust?
- Does it have large tanks so I don’t have to make so many trips to the sink?
- Does it have brushes that lift the nap of the carpet and get cleaning solution down deep?
- Does the machine have a feature to blow air on the carpets to speed up the drying process?
- What is the warranty on the carpet cleaner?
- How wide is the path that the machine cleans?
- Do I need to go over the same area twice or is it one-pass cleaning?
- Does it come with cleaning solution?
- Does the carpet cleaner have accessories that will enable me to clean my upholstery, stairs, hard surface floors or the carpets in my car?
- Can it be serviced locally?
- How heavy is the carpet cleaner?
- How much storage room do I need for the machine?
- Does the machine have a user’s manual that is clear and easy to understand?
- Can I afford to get this machine or can I afford NOT to get this machine?
- What are my floor care needs?
So, do I want to own or rent carpet cleaner? In my estimation, in the long run, my best investment would be to own a carpet cleaner. Owning gives me more freedom, many more options, fewer unanswered questions and less inconvenience than choosing carpet cleaner rental.
